Is the restricted movement of the ancillary phthalimido-functionalized arm of a NHC Pd(II) complex, observed in 1H-NMR, due to a bidentate coordination mode of both the phthalimido ligand and NHC or a restricted rotation of the CNHC-Pd and ethylene bridge because of a steric effect?The carbonyl group of the phthalimido ligand displays insignificant shift of the stretching IR bands for the ligand L+ and complex (PdCl(NCCH3)2L+) in solution, thus eliminating the possibility of the carbonyl coordination to the Pd-metal center. The coordination of the phthalimido ligand via Pd-N bonding is also determined as not observable in FAR IR. In addition, the ethylene bridge of the phthalimido ligand in the palladium complex [PdCl(NCCH3)2L+] displays anti-conformation in solution. This indicates that the phthalimido ligand is not in close proximity with the palladium metal center and facing away from the palladium center.
