Polymer materials such as polypropylenes, acrylics, styrenics, polycarbonates, and copolyesters are widely used in the medical industry. Each polymer has its own unique property and deciding which polymer to use depends on ongoing and anticipated changes in the industry, cost, and fitness-for-use requirements. Recently, Eastman Tritan� copolyesters were introduced into the medical market and have brought great interest due to the clarity, outstanding toughness and chemical resistance resulting from the unique polymer chemistry. The combination of properties, in addition to being BPA-free, makes Tritan� well suited to meet these emerging trends in medical devices and packaging applications. In this presentation, we discuss the unique chemistry of TritanTM copolyester that is based on 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (TMCD), structure property relationships of TritanTM copolyesters, and its unique combination of properties that can meet the demands of medical application. We compare the transparency, heat resistance, sterilization, toughness, and chemical resistance of the variety of plastics in the context of the current trends and drivers in the medical industry. Oncology drug chemical resistances of Eastman Tritan copolyesters and other plastics used in medical device are also discussed which is intended to aid designers and engineers in selecting the appropriate polymer for their application.
