High surface area Mo2N as an electrocatalyst support was synthesized using ammonolysis of various molybdenum precursors in conjunction with both a sacrificial silica and MgO support method. The reaction pathway to the formation of Mo2N was studied through an intermediate MoO2 path as well as a direct route to Mo2N. Additionally, the effects of NH3 concentration were studied. The Mo2N support materials were characterized using SEM, BET, and XRD. It was found that the use of sacrificial supports in the preparation of Mo2N leads to higher surface areas than that of commercially available Mo2N through the control of material microstructure. Also, aerosol pre-forming of the starting material was shown to significantly reduce the required NH3 concentration required to fully convert intermediate MoO3 to Mo2N.
