The bacterium Streptomyces cattleya has the unusual capacity to biosynthesis the organic fluorine compounds fluoroacetate and 4-fluorinothreonine. We have been interested in the fluorination enzyme (fluorinase) in this bacteria and have been able to over-express it and explore it as a biotransformation catalyst.1,2The fluorination enzyme catalyses the conversion of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) and fluoride ion to 5'-fluoro-5'-deoxyadenosine (FDA) amd l-methionine.Recent developments using the fluorinase to incorporate fluorine-18 into organic compounds will be described and in particular the application of the enzyme to preparing fluorine-18 labelled compounds for labelling bioactive peptides, for positron emission tomography application.[1] M.
