Combination of electron-rich aromatics with complementally designed electron-poor aromatic molecules can result in the self-assembly of alternating donor-acceptor columnar liquid crystals (DACLCs).  These materials often have enhanced properties compared to those of the individual components, including greater mesophase stability, charge mobility, and broad UV/Vis absorbance due to a charge transfer band.  These properties make DACLCs potentially interesting towards a variety of organic electronic applications.  Presented here are several series of relatively simple aromatics that have been designed, synthesized, and then mixed and matched in modular fashion to form an array of new DACLC materials.  Component structure to bulk material properties are systematically investigated, towards better understanding, and predicting, of this emerging class of organic materials.
