  In this lecture, I will describe the evolution of a new, highly stereocontrolled, synthetic pathway to the antitumor natural product, (-)-echinosporin, that utilizes the rarely applied Padwa anionic [3+2]-cycloadditive-elimination for cyclopentane ring annulation. I will also present details of a useful new ketone enolate C-acylation method that evolved directly out of these total synthesis efforts which exploits alkyl pentafluorophenyl carbonates as active electrophiles.
