New reactivity of the conducting polymer, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) where PEDOT mediates a Ritter reaction between alcohols and various nitriles will be presented. Ordinarily, the Ritter reaction requires a strong protic or Lewis acid, but replacement of the acid with PEDOT has been seen to result in milder reaction conditions. The yields obtained with PEDOT were compared with those acquired with H2SO4.  Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that PEDOT is behaving as an alcohol-selective Lewis acid. Additional studies examining potential structural or chemical changes to PEDOT will be disclosed.
