By careful selection of catalyst and starting materials, three-component couplings can provide direct, modular access to nitrogen-containing compounds from propargylamines to quinoline derivatives. Green solvent-free multicomponent reactions can proceed such that the sole by-product is one equivalent of water if equimolar amounts of carbonyl, amine, and terminal alkyne are employed. This set of conditions led to the development of a dual Cu/Ti system and the first method capable of incorporating unactivated ketones in the formation of tetrasubstituted propargylamines.
