Anovel polymer platform technology was developed that involves the conversion ofa plant oil to a mixture of vinyl ether monomers in which each monomer moleculecontains a fatty acid ester group derived from the parent plant oil. The cationic polymerization system developed allowsfor living polymerization of the monomers exclusively through the vinyl ethergroups. This characteristic enablesdouble bonds present in the unsaturated pendent groups to be utilized for theproduction of thermosets either directly or by derivatization to otherfunctional groups including epoxy, hydroxy, and acrylate groups. In addition to homopolymerization, themonomers have been copolymerized with other monomers to create a wide varietyof functionalized polymers expected to have utility for a number of marketsincluding coatings, composites, rubber compounds, and personnel-care products. An overview of the synthesis,characterization, and properties of key polymers will be presented along withthe properties of various formulated materials.
