Well-defined macroporous polymers (foams) can be created by the so-called emulsion templating process, whereby a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) is used as a precursor to a porous material.  The presentation will describe the preparation of such porous polymers (polyHIPEs) by thiol-ene and thiol-yne photopolymerization.  Multifunctional thiols and alkenes (typically acrylates) are used as components to prepare these porous materials in a modular fashion, allowing the morphology and properties to be tuned.  The resulting materials are biodegradable and have been found to be biocompatible in initial cell culture assays.  The preparation of materials with asymmetric porosities and properties will be described, together with 3D printing approaches to prepare micro-architectures and features.
