Publishing is a significant aspect of the chemical enterprise for most researchers and there are several ethical considerations integral to the success and vitality of the scientific literature. It is in an author's best interest to put forth original research as accurately and objectively as possible. However several challenges arise in practice and are further compounded in the online environment. Plagiarism, self-plagiarism and co-authorship continue to be at issue. Peer review is neither comprehensive nor fail-safe and pre-reviewed material is increasingly available online. What are the implications of open publication and and are there acceptable best practices for access and re-use of electronic information? How are intellectual property rights managed in the online environment? This talk will give a broad sweep of the scientific publishing environment from the perspective of a science librarian, with a particular focus on the role of the researcher.
