Co catalysts supported on different modified aluminas have been investigated for CO hydrogenation in a fixed-bed reactor at 483 K, 20 bar and H2/CO = 2.1. Some of the catalysts were promoted by Re. Different modified aluminas (d,?,a) were prepared by high temperature treatment of a small and a medium pore ?-Al2O3 (Puralox). Depending on the Co particle size, an apparent correlation between activity and the Al2O3structure was observed. Other aluminas were modified by Zn or Ni, followed by high temperature treatment before Co/Re impregnation. The results are compared to previous studies dealing with low level contamination (25-1000 ppm) from alkali or alkaline earth elements [1]. In general, modifying the catalyst with alkalis, alkaline earths or transition metals is one way of affecting both activity and selectivity.
