Gold nanoparticles have been a topic of great interest over the past few decades, and references in the literature regarding their synthesis and characterization are abundant. Because of the concentration of medical research and possibilities for collaboration in the Houston area, we became interested in the medical applications of gold nanoparticle synthesis. Based on the results of our previous work with gelatin, as well as our desire not to involve chemicals with possible concomitant toxicity issues, we chose to continue studying biomolecules as reducing agents and ligands in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. To date, we have studied gelatin, sodium alginate, chitosan (poly-(D)-glucosamine), and glutathione. These biomolecules were studied alone and in combination with polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium citrate, or lysine, and we have been successful in synthesizing gold nanoparticles using several of these biomolecules and combinations. We have characterized the synthesized gold nanoparticles via UV-VIS spectroscopy, TEM, and DLS.
