Adsorption of ethanol and formation of copper nanoparticles following CVD of (hfac)Cu(VTMS) on ZnO powder was studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy,  and supplemented by density functional theory investigations. Specifically, we address the nature of the surface species produced by alcohol adsorption on ZnO powder by spectroscopic investigation coupled to the tests of stability. The initial dissociative adsorption resulting in a monodentate surface ethoxy intermediate characterized by clear methyl deformational modes at 1390 cm-1, is immediately followed by the formation of a bidentate ligand. The structures, depending on the specific ZnO surface, described computationally help determine the nature of the bidentate surface species by cluster calculations compared to the results of the experimental infrared studies. In addition, the nature of chemical interaction of the same powder surfaces with a copper deposition precursor (hfac)Cu(VTMS) in a controlled way to produce a mixed Cu(0)/Cu(I) catalytic systems will be discussed.
