This talk will review progress made in recent years by presenter's research group at the University of Cincinnati in understanding the microstructure and catalytic functions of crystalline multicomponent Mo-V-Te-Nb-O oxides, including fruitful collaborations with Dr. Gaffney that focused on understanding the topmost surface chemistry in so-called M1 phase catalysts, uniquely active and selective in propane ammoxidation. These insights highlighted the importance of ab planes of the M1 phase for this catalytic reaction and, more recently, enabled the development of first theoretical models to probe the entire reaction mechanism and the origins of the M1 phase reactivity.
