The objective of this research is to test the hypothesis that cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) dispersions can be processed into films with properties suitable for the fabrication of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). These films could be an inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative to electronics grade silicon in these devices. Of particular interest is the potential for anisotropic electrical and mechanical properties resulting from liquid crystalline and shear alignment. To explore this potential, the dispersion microstructure and shear response for CNCs with multiple surface chemistries have been investigated. Dispersions investigated include aqueous sulfonated CNCs, aqueous esterified CNCs, and aqueous CNCs with the native hydroxylated surface chemistry. CNC films prepared from different concentrations using shear and non-shear methods were characterized for their morphology and mechanical properties.  Finally, a MEMS fabrication methodology was demonstrated.
