Synthetic zeolites are widely used as catalysts in the refining and petrochemical industry, for instance in aromatics petrochemicals, fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking. UOP has been very active in inventing and patenting new zeolite materials referred to as UOP Zeolitic Materials (UZM's) for use in refining and petrochemical catalytic and adsorptive processes. Previously, we discussed and published results on some aspects of UZM-5 synthesis and reactivity(1).UZM-5 (UFI) is a 2-dimension microporous material with small pore openings (8-MR) and nano-thin plate morphology.  UZM-5 performance in benzene alkylation with light olefin varies systematically with the synthesis progression. The characterization and catalytic test results suggest that the most effective alkylation performance is derived from optimizing the accessibility and acidity of exterior active sites.1) D.Y.
