Fluorine is increasingly present in pharmaceutical agents, materials and agrochemicals, yet the synthesis of fluorocarbons remains a considerable challenge. My group is exploring several methods for the efficient synthesis of functionalized fluorocarbon building blocks. Methods include metal-catalyzed partial defluorination of polyfluoroaromatics and conversion of aryl halides into fluoroaromatics. Progress in these areas will be presented, along with mechanistic data.
