Over the past decade there has been extraordinary development of new selective organic methods that proceed via high valent palladium intermediates. A key step in these transformations involves carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reductive elimination from Pd(IV). However, depending on the oxidant used, more than one product can be obtained after the reductive elimination step.  Here we report a mechanistic study of the competition between C-N and C-F reductive elimination from Pd(IV) complexes, in which the factors and reaction pathways that control C-N versus C-F are studied in detail.
