A series of phosphine and phosphoranimines that are potential precursors to cyclic and polymeric phosphazenes containing ethyleneoxy substituents have been prepared by several reaction sequences. Ethyleneoxy groups on the well-studied polymer [bis(methoxyethoxyethoxy)phosphazene, also known as �MEEP�, facilitate ionic conductivity, but also impart a low glass transition temperature, Tg, that can limit the utility of the polymer. Replacing one ethyleneoxy group with a phenyl group is expected to reduce the torsional mobility of the phosphorus-nitrogen polymer backbone, thus increasing the Tgand changing the conductivity. The utility of these synthetic approaches, the characterization of these new compounds, and progress toward polymer synthesis will be discussed. Alternate approaches to incorporating extended ether chains will also be discussed.
