Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are of considerable interest because of their unique behavior in straddling the interface between the quantum and classical magnetic worlds. It has recently been shown (Nguyen et al., J. Am Chem. Soc. 2011 , 133, 20688) that the [Mn3O(O2CMe)3(mpko)3](ClO4) (mpko = methyl-2-pyridyl ketone oximate) SMM with S = 6 can be used as a building block to synthesize a supramolecular tetramer if the oxime in its preparation is replaced with a dioxime. We have been seeking to extend this work to dicarboxylates as bridging groups between SMMs. We have thus been exploring carboxylate substitution on [Mn3O(O2CMe)3(mpko)3](ClO4) with dicarboxylic acids, taking advantage of the toluene:acetic acid azeotrope to help drive the substitution to completion. This has yielded a supramolecular SMM tetramer [Mn3]4 with the four Mn3 SMMs forming a Mn12 �tetrahedron of triangles.� The structure and magnetic properties of this tetramer will be described.
