In our group we recently found that [Rh(bpca)2][PF6] (bpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl) amide) demonstrated clear indication of the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In the present study, a group of similar complexes were synthesized and studied electrochemically in the absence and in the presence of CO2. The common structure for the studied complexes was [M(bpca)2](n-2)+ (M= Ni(II), Co(II), Pd(IV), and Pt(IV); n=charge of metal center). The platinum and palladium complexes have not been reported in the literature, so synthesis procedures of these compounds were developed and their structures were confirmed spectroscopically (UV-vis, NMR, IR, and/or X-ray). The cyclic voltammetric behavior of each complex was measured in acetonitrile under argon and under CO2. The Co and Pd complex demonstrated potential catalytic activity toward the reduction of CO2, and so subsequent electrolysis experiments were conducted to elucidate possible products of that reaction.
