Due to the prominence of polycyclic substructures in biologically relevant materials, many biomimetic reactions have been studied. Here, an observable [Pt]-alkyl is generated during an enantioselective platinum catalyzed cation-olefin cyclization of a model steroidal system. This [Pt]-alkyl can undergo b-H elimination resulting in a presumed [Pt]-H which is abstracted with oxocarbenium generated in situ from an acetal, or electrophilic fluorination generating a putative [Pt IV] -F that undergoes reductive elimination yielding a fluorinated organic product.
