We studied the surface restructuring process of a stepped Pt(557) crystal induced by O2 and its mixture with reducing gases, using high-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (HP-STM) and ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). At 1 torr of O2, a 1-D chain structure appears at the step edges, which is followed by the formation of a layer of surface Pt oxide clusters. Reducing gases such as CO and H2 were introduced into the system to study the reactivity of surface Pt oxide, and the corresponding structural changes on Pt(557). Both CO and H2 can react with and thus remove the surface Pt oxide clusters, leading to the re-appearance of the stepped structure.
