Photoinduced charge separation process in the [(bpy)Re(CO)3DMABN] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, DMABN = 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile) complex in both methanol and dichloromethane solution has been investigated using femtosecond multi-pulse spectroscopy(UV-pump, Vis/IR-probe). Preliminary results indicate the initial formation of Metal to Ligand Charge Transfer (MLCT) state between rhenium and bpy after electronic excitation at 400nm. In methanol, the relaxation of the initially formed MLCT state produces a bpy- - DMABN+ Ligand to Ligand Charger Transfer (LLCT) state associated with electron transfer from the DMABN moiety to the metal. The characteristic time of the LLCT formation is found to be ca. 30ps, inferred from the excited state transient vibrational spectrum. Three-pulse (UV-pump/IR-pump/Vis-probe) experiments are in process studying how the IR excitation of the CN bridge vibration mode can affect the rate of the charge separation process.
