The gas-liquid scattering dynamics for CO2 on perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and squalane(2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyltetracosane) were investigated by directing a supersonic molecular beam of CO2 at a continuously refreshed surfaces of these liquids and collecting time-of-flight and angular distributions of the inelastically scattered CO2 molecules, with the use of a rotatable mass spectrometer detector.  The CO2 molecules had incidence energies, Ei, of 10.56 and 4.37 kcal mol-1 and incidence angles, ?i, of 0�, 30�, 45�, and 60�.  The scattered products could be divided into two components, impulsive scattering (IS) and thermal desorption (TD).  For the IS component, the CO2 molecules scatter from the surface mainly in the specular direction while maintaining a large fraction of their initial translational energy.  The translational energy distributions of the IS molecules could not be fit by a Maxwell-Boltzmann temperature.  The average fractional energy transfer of the IS molecules could be fit well by an impulsive model that allows the determination of the effective mass of the localized region of the surface that interacts with the incident CO2 molecules.  For the TD component, the CO2 molecules exit the surface in a cosine distribution about the surface normal, with a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of velocities given by the surface temperature.  The fraction of CO2 molecules that scatters thermally is higher for the hydrocarbon surface than the fluorocarbon surface, and it increases significantly when the incidence energy decreases.  This fraction also increases slightly when the surface temperature increases.
