The properties of colloidal semiconducting nanocrystals depend fundamentally upon structure. To better understand nanocrystal chemistry, we have developed robust nanocrystal syntheses using defined precursor chemistry, probed nanocrystal surface structure by investigating ligand exchange reactions, and studied smaller clusters and inorganic molecules that serve as models for conventional nanocrystals. The specific materials range from novel precursors for CdS and PbS nanocrystals, halide-terminated CdSe nanocrystals bound by a variety of labile ligands, and atomically-defined CdSe clusters, all of which provide insight into nanocrystal growth and surface structure. Utilizing the ligand exchange chemistry developed in our labs, we have fabricated solution-processed devices that exhibit extraordinary carrier mobilities (10 cm2 V-1s-1). Our work highlights the need for chemically accurate models of nanocrystals to rationally design the syntheses and post-synthetic treatments required for the use of colloidal semiconductors in practical applications
