Cathodic stripping voltammetry (CSV) is an electrochemical technique in which low concentrations of redox active analytes can be quantified. The detection of manganese (Mn2+) in aqueous solutions was using CSV on platinum and glassy carbon electrodes was developed. In this technique, the Mn2+ is first preconcentrated on the electrode surface by applying a positive oxidizing potential over a period of time. The potential is then swept in the negative direction, reducing the manganese and stripping it off the electrode. Square wave stripping voltammetry (SWSV) was selected for the detection. The buffer system, pH, and deposition time were optimized for each electrode system. This allowed for the trace amounts (<20 ppb) of Mn2+ to be detected.
