Improving reaction efficiency and selectivity can reduce side-products produced through a synthetic scheme thereby reducing waste. Selective C-H activation with oxidation is one promising strategy. Numerous methods of using vanadium or chromium (VI) catalysts have been investigated, however; selectivity remains elusive. The application of these methods is complicated by harsh reaction conditions required and difficult work-up procedures. We have previously reported a 2-quinoxalinol salen ligand � abbreviated salqu - as a catalyst support for Cu(II). The salqu copper complexes have been shown to have an increased catalytic efficacy as compared to analogous copper salophen complexes in the oxidation of aryl methylenes. New reactions have been investigated, and here we describe selective allylic oxidation and alkyne oxidations. Simple olefin substrates can be oxidized using the salqu catalyst withTBHP (up to 99% yield) within a very short reaction time and with great tolerance for additional functional groups.
