Three laboratories were removed from the first semester organic chemistry sequence and replaced with target discussion sessions. Each discussion session involved a pretest to assess understanding after the laboratory, an interactive exercise to improve learning and a posttest to assess understanding after the discussion session. Where appropriate, the exercises went beyond laboratory material to include lecture material in an attempt to reinforce the relationship between lab and lecture.
