The effect of ionic strength on the activity of a family of designed antimicrobial peptides was measured for a panel of microorganisms. The minimum sterilizing concentrations (MSC) were found to vary linearly with ionic strength for a variety of ionic species.  In addition, specific ion effects were observed for MgSO4 which was later shown to be due to the divalent Mg2+ ion. The MSC values for our peptides against four microorganisms were determined in the presence of divalent Mg and Ca ions. Specific ion effects were observed to occur in different concentraion ranges in an organism dependent fashion.
