In order to understand how the mobility of positively charged nanoparticles is influenced by the clay minerals in a soil environment, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to observe the interactions of swelling clays with TiO2 nanoparticles. By measuring the swelling changes in individual quasi-crystals of a clay mineral, which were exposed to an aqueous suspension of nanoparticles of various sizes, the degree to which different types of nanoparticles may be incorporated into the interlayer regions of the clay minerals was determined. The behavior on the nanoscale was correlated with mobility in a soil environment in a series of column experiments.
