Native light harvesting systems are highly efficient. When a photon is absorbed the energy is transferred to the reaction center with near unity quantum yield. However, the absorption spectrum leaves gaps in the visible and near IR regions. Using self assembling LH1 peptide analogs, bacteriochlorophyll and designer chromophores, this project affords antenna complexes that enhance solar spectral coverage and have high energy transfer efficiencies comparable to the native systems.
