One-dimensional liquid chromatography has experienced a paradigm shift, moving from the �high-performance� to the �ultra-high-performance� level. We are exploring ways to take LC � and comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC�LC) � to the next �HYPERformance� level. This requires very high performance in both dimensions, but also smart ways to combine two LC systems without great losses in the interface.  Active modulation in LC�LC mimics the common operation of GC�GC systems, focusing and concentrating a fraction eluted from the first-dimension column, followed by a very rapid release. One case in which such a situation can be approached in LC�LC is when ion chromatography and reversed-phase LC are combined through a suppressor interface [1]. Other modulation principles are being explored.      It will be demonstrated that UHP(LC�LC) may lead to 10-fold shorter analysis times than conventional HP(LC�LC) in the separation of polymers.
