The methodology for preparation of an amine-epoxide hyperbranched anion exchange condensation polymers was initially developed in 2004 (see US Patent #7,291,395).  This approach to the synthesis of ion exchange materials allows the preparation of a wide variety of anion exchange structures with diverse selectivity attributes not achievable by other synthetic methods.  Initial materials were prepared using just two reagents: butandiol diglycidyl ether and methyl amine.  Using these two reagents, combining them in a series of sequential reactions allows the preparation of hyperbranched structures that are highly hydrophilic and exhibit excellent chromatographic properties for a wide range of anionic species.  Here we describe a method to modify the selectivity of such hyperbranched structures through introduction of multiple hyperbranched polyol substituents at each branch point of the structure.  A number of examples will be provided to demonstrate the versatility of this new synthetic technique.  This new architecture allows preparation of materials with selectivity never seen before in previously described materials.  Particularly notable is the unique selectivity observed for multivalent species.
