Chemical-looping Combustion (CLC) and chemical-looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) have generated tremendous research interest in the past decade.  Technologies based on CLC and CLOU have the potential to assist in the capture of CO2 from coal-fired power plants.  In both cases, an air separation unit in not needed to supply oxygen; studies suggest that carbon is captured with a smaller energy penalty versus other technologies.  CLC and CLOU both utilize a metal �oxygen carrier� which is reduced in a fuel reactor and then oxidized in an air reactor. CLOU offers a potential advantage as the oxygen carriers for this scenario release oxygen and solid fuels are then combusted with the oxygen.  In CLC, a syngas is generated through the gasification of the solid fuel. The generated syngas in CLC is subsequently oxidized to CO2 and H2O by reaction with the oxygen carrier.  This paper discusses both approaches.
