Drug-resistant strains of bacteria are an ever present threat to modern healthcare and the need for new treatments is growing. The discovery of novel stilbene compounds with activity against a number of gram-positive bacteria as well as mycobacterium has led to a potentially new class of antibacterials that show great promise against drug-resistant strains of bacteria. SAR studies along with the development of a simple 1-step synthesis of diverse stilbene analogs has led to compounds with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC's) in the range of 1-10 �g/mL against a number of gram-positive bacterial species including Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and mycobacterium species including surrogates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). A pharmacophore model has also been constructed to aid in designing new compounds and to further our understanding of the mode of action of these novel small molecules.
