Large scale farming practices have led to a vast increase in the application of nitrogen based fertilizers, in turn becoming a major source of bacterial nitrogen oxide gases. The focus of this research has begun to further elucidate bacterial nitrogen metabolism reaction pathways, intermediates and mechanisms using biomimetic porphyrin models of iron(II/III) and copper(I/II). The metallo-complexes catalytic oxidizing potential of organo-phosphines by nitrogen dioxide (NO2x) and nitric oxide (NOx) and their corresponding anions and cations has been investigated. Nitrogen oxides in-situ reactions and complexation of the metallo-porphyrins were characterized by FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Organo-phosphine reaction products were determined by 31P NMR and the reaction headspace gases determined by GC/MS. A proposed mechanism has been postulated for organo-phosphine catalytic oxidation by NO2x. In-situ ratios of metallo-porphyrins to NOx species were determined in the formation of the nitrosyl adducts. This work is funded through RI's EPSCoR and NASA Space Grant Consortium.
