One of the major goals in organic chemistry research is the development of efficient methods for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. We are investigating a particular combination of organometallic reagents as coupling partners for alkenyl halides using phosphines as catalysts to yield �-?-unsaturated ketones. Traditionally this type of transformation is transition metal-catalyzed, mainly with palladium or nickel, both of which are toxic heavy metals. However, we have good reasons to believe that this reaction can operate under an alternative mechanism that excludes the use of said metals. We are currently developing this method for general use, but also for more specific goals such as the synthesis of Trichostatin A � a natural product that acts as a epigenetic modulator.
