Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide a unique architecture for studying the structural and electronic properties of molecules in the solid state. Orientational control of conjugated organic linkers such as oligothiophene derivatives are of particular interest due to their optoelectronic properties. New MOFs based on oligothiophene linkers and first row transition metals will be discussed. Functionalization of the thiophene rings with phenyl and hexyl substituents as well as variation of oligomer length results in structural, electronic, and magnetic changes in the frameworks are reported. Structures varying from doubly-pillared chains to two-dimensional wave-like sheets to novel three-dimensional frameworks with multiple coordination modes have been discovered, including the first reported example of a structurally characterized terthiophene coordination polymer. Investigations of these new MOFs as energy transfer materials will be presented.
