The complexes Cp*W(NO)(CH2CMe3)(?3-CH2CHCHPh) (1  ) and Cp*W(NO)(CH2CMe3)(?3-CH2CHCMe2) (2  ) lose neopentane upon thermolysis to generate the 16-electron intermediate complexes Cp*W(NO)(CH2CMe3)(?2-CH2=C=CHPh) (A  ) and Cp*W(NO)(CH2CMe3)(?3-CH2=C=CMe2) (B  ), respectively. These 16-electon ?2-allene intermediate complexes can effect the selective C-H activation of a variety of hydrocarbons (RCH3) to give the complexes Cp*W(NO)(CH2R)(?3-CH2CHCHPh) (3  ) and Cp*W(NO)(CH2R)(?3-CH2CHCMe2) (4  ). The derivative chemistry of these product complexes will be presented.
