Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials consisting metal ions/clusters bridged by organic ligands. They have high surface areas (>1000 m2/g) and thermal stability (~400oC).  In this study, we have created a new linker by reacting p-phenylenediamine with 2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde to form (N1E,N4E)-N1,N4-bis((1H-imidazol-2-yl)methylene)benzene-1,4-diamine (will be called BIM-2). This linker has potential for forming MOFs with large pores. We have synthesized a novel metal organic framework by reacting this ligand with a zinc salt. The powder X-ray Diffraction pattern of this material shows a low angle XRD peak at 4.6o 2? indicating a large unit cell. The large pore materials are very desirable in separation, storage and catalysis applications involving large molecules. This MOF, ZBIF-2 is thermally stable up to 300oC in air and N2. N2 adsorption studies of this MOF showed a surface area >700 m2/g. Structural Characterization is in progress.
