Nitric oxide (NO) is found to have diverse physiological functions. It serves as a messenger in cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. NO is also a primary pollutant emitted directly into the atmosphere and oxidized to NO2 in the presence of ozone. NO and NO2 are collectively known as NOx because they are rapidly inter-converted during the day. Furthermore, NO2 is categorized as one of the components of criteria ambient air pollutants. Accordingly, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established the ambient air quality standards annual average for NO2 to 0.053ppm. As a result, there is a greater demand for accurate, stable and low cost sensor for NO at or below ppm level. Fluorescence detection of NO using a transition metal complex of tridentate ligand has many advantageous over other techniques like colorimetry, chemiluminescence, and electrochemistry. It detects NO rapidly, directly, and selectively with very good sensitivity. The objective of this work is to study the fluorescence detection of NO with Cu (II) complex of 5 � (dimethylamino)-N, N-bis (pyridin-2-ylmethyl) naphthalene-1-sulfonamide. By functionalizing the donor ligand which plays a major role in the absorption and emission of the fluorescent group, it is possible to tailor the sensitivity and selectivity of this technique.
