Exfoliation of layered materials into their elementary layers has attracted interest recently because such nanosheets have useful and often unique properties. Our aim is to develop synthetic strategies for preparing two-dimensional metal diboride nanosheets. For example, we have delaminated and exfoliated the layered ceramic CrB2 using solution-based methods. These nanosheets were characterized by a variety of techniques, including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. CrB2 nanosheets should have a wide range of useful properties with respect to high hardness, wear resistance, chemical inertness, and high thermal and electrical conductivity. With an eye toward applications, we also demonstrate the solution processing of CrB2 nanosheets.
