SnO2 nanoparticles of high crystallinity and narrow size distribution were synthesized using the solvothermal processing at 160-200 C with ethanol, 1-butanol, ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol or tetraethylene glycol as solvent. The SnO2 nanoparticles were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the morphology studied by FE-SEM. The mean crystallite size of SnO2 particles prepared in polyol medium was in the range of 12-15 nm, while the size of particles prepared in ethanol and 1-butanol was smaller than 10 nm. The reaction profiles for the solvothermal process in varieties of solvents were studied with a pressure-DSC, which revealed that the actual reactions occurred at lower temperatures. For example, the transformation of SnCl4 to SnO2 occurred at approximate 130 C and 120 C in ethanol and 1-butanol, respectively. The reaction mechanism will be discussed.
