A silane coupling agent, 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane, was reacted with the alcohol terminus of a diblock copolymer, CH3O-(CH2CH2O)43-(COCH2CH2CH2CH2CH2O)9-H, to give the corresponding urethane. The silane was reacted with the surface of 8 nm diameter, single crystal, magnetite nanoparticles to give particles with the diblock bound to the surface by a silane coupling agent. The presence of bound polymer was confirmed by FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectra. In water it was expected that the hydrophobic polycaprolactone block would collapse around the particle to create a semi-crystalline shell. The poly(ethylene glycol) block would form a corona that allows the particles to disperse in water. Indeed the particles could be dispersed in water and dynamic light scattering gave an average hydrodynamic radius of 24 nm. Dibucaine, anmantithetic and surrogate for a drug, could be loaded into the polycaprolactone shell. The dibucaine loading efficiency and thermally triggered release rate will be reported.
