The siderophore, Ferrioxamine B, has been shown to electrocatalytically reduce nitric oxide, a substrate of significant biological importance, to N2O.  The N-N coupling step is the critical step in any proposed mechanisms and several mechanisms have been proposed including one that proceeds via a novel ferrous dinitrosyl intermediate.  Complexes of this type are not known, although the recently reported dinitrosyl iron complex (DNIC) containing both a nitroxyl and a nitrosyl ligand is very similar.  In order to model this intermediate, we have chosen to study the interactions of the iron complexes of the dihydroxamate ligand, N, N'-dihydroxy-N,N'- dimethyldodecanediamide with both nitric oxide and nitrite.
