Pincer ligands are easily modified and allow facile manipulation of electronic and geometric properties. Previous results from our group show that the strain imposed by the ligand and the anionic charge stabilizes high oxidation states of early transition metals, especially in a hard-hard-hard arrangement of donor atoms. Also, pincer-type ligands allow relatively easy access to the metal center by leaving trans positions open, creating inherently kinetically reactive complexes. We have used an CF3-ONO3- trianionic pincer-type ligand and synthesized a family of Fe(III) complexes. We present the synthesis of these compounds and their characterization in the solid state (X-ray diffraction, SQUID), in solution (cyclic voltammetry, EPR), and in silico using DFT calculations.
