Glucose is the most abundant building block of biomass, the monomer of cellulose, co-monomer of hemi-cellulose, and one of the components of sucrose. Although there is a great interest to produce chemicals from glucose-based feedstocks selectively, their conversion generally requires forcing reaction conditions. The hydrogenolysis of the hydroxymethyl group to a methyl group in the 6-position of glucose or its derivatives is a new approach to the conversion of glucose to 5-methylfurfural via 6-deoxyglucose. Details of the reaction conditions, the nature of the catalysts, and the mechanisms involved will be presented.
