Photoinduced electron transfer mediated by visible light sensitization of metal polypyridyl complexes has emerged as a powerful tool for constructing complex molecular architectures.  While such methodology is limited by the thermodynamics of electron transfer between chromophore and substrate, we have found that sensitized triplet-triplet energy transfer significantly expands the reaction landscape available to visible light photocatalysis.  This talk will focus on our discovery that dienyl azides undergo highly efficient nitrogen extrusion, cyclization and isomerization to pyrroles in the presence of Ru(dtbbpy)32+.
